Obviously all-seson tires are a series of trade-offs...

That said, in the correct situation all-season tires make very good sense. I have all-season tires on both my cars because here in the Seattle area we have a few months of dry, lots of months of wet, and a handful of snow days.
On my 1998 SAAB 900SET, I am currently using 205/55-16 Dunlop SP Sport 5000 all-season tires. They are working very well. They are fairly quiet, good dry grip, excellent wet grip, and fine in light snow conditions.
I also like the new Michelin Pilot A/S really well, but the price is nearly 70% more than the Dunlop SP Sport 5000.
There are many more choices in 205/55-16 than 205/50-16 in the all-season tire market. I have had no problems with the tires rubbing or tire clearance.
