94 900S. 135K. Auto.

Symptoms are: hesitation and stalling while accelerating, and even while just driving at city speeds. Looking for help in diagnosis or just ideas for things to look at.

It started about a two blocks from home on my way back from work last night. I thought that it was weird, but no big deal, so I changed clothes and left for rugby practice. About a mile into my trip it started doing it continually, so I turned around and limped home. The funny thing is that it was the first time in months that I hadn't been using the AC--the first nice day in St. Louis--the AC usually makes my car idle rougher and considerably less powerful.

Also potentially related, the always rough idle has gotten worse over the last month or so. It sometimes will seem to get really rough for a few seconds and then recover. There has been some visible vapor exiting the passenger side of the engine compartment for a couple of weeks, too.

At first I thought that it was a leaky radiator hose or clamp, but I tightened everything down. While there I noticed that a vac hose was disconnected, and it turns out that the SIS switching valve had disintegrated. The part's on order at the dealer, but I don't think that it's the problem, since it's clearly been off for some time (at least two weeks) and this was the first appearance for the stalling.

My mech warned me 6-9 months ago that the timing chain was disintegrating and that it would eventually go bad, but I imagine that the engine would totally stop at that point, wouldn't it? It feels almost like the time that the idler pulleys went bad, but they were replaced only 10-15k ago.
