Which mod? There have been a few such things in the past. You can know what space you have and look up filters by size and shape. Cylinder, egg shape cross section and straight and tapered variations. You also need to look at the opening diameter. Note that the filter element must not touch anything and that the element should be free if vibration. Sand on the element with vibration can go through oil cotton filters and foam filters.

If you take a foam filter and dump table salt on it, then vibrate it, the salt will go through the fitler very easily. Why salt, because when folks do such experiments, they can wash the remaining salt out of the filter. If the test was done with sand, then you might not know if you ever got all of the sand out so the filter could be used.

I would not want to use a K&N where it got exposed to sand. So a cone filter exposed behind the grill is probably great for a race, but probably asking for disaster with a daily driver that has to last for years.

The rubber isolated stock air box is ideal in many respects. It is isolated from engine vibrations that could come through the plumbing.

So a filter should be in a calm location, where things like sand can settle of it the air stream before getting to the filter. For this reason, be concerned about ram air ducts that direct air directly from the front of the vehicle to a filter. These arrangements can easly direct sand from the air stream directly to the filter. Ram air effects are quite insignificant. And at the speeds where such effects can start to occur, the CFMs involved may make the flow losses of the duct result in a net loss, so the gains are illusionary. But self deception can be fun while it lasts.
