Did you remove camshaft sprockets from camshafts? If so did you see that each sprocket have two positions when installing, depending on which camshaft it's installed on.
If sprockets have not been removed, did you notice that each sprocket have two sets of marks ( it sounds like you did) and that with a closer look you will see that on the sprockets is also printed 1,2,3 and 4.
The two sprockets closest to fire wall have each number 1 and 2 imprinted in the center hub. Both sprockets closest to radiator have each number 3 and 4 imprinted in the center.
When installing the belt, you have to use the lineup mark that coinside with that particular camshaft number.
It's very easy to mistake and use number 2 mark on 1st camshaft and number 1 mark on second camshaft, as it is to mistakenly use number 4 mark on 3.d camshaft and number 3 mark on 4th camshaft.
Take a close look toward the center of sprockets and you see what I mean.
Does the tapping happens only once when the piston is at top, or do you hear the tapping several times when the piston moving through the cylinder?
