I have driven many of the new, high output diesels which are appearing on the UK market. These include the new 150 hp 2000cc BMW engine, which is as fast as the new valvetronic petrol BMW 4 cyl 1.9 engine, (a few less HP, but more torque), and the 135 hp VW/Audi engine. These vehicles do 50 to 60 mpg (mixed driving), with average service intervals of 15,000 miles (service is indicated by on board computer).
Even better are the bigger higher performance jobs from BMW Audi and Mercedes. The 3 litre BMW gives close to 200 hp, more torque than a Ferrari Maranello, better than 40 mpg, and is a superb drive, especially with the BMW steptronic sequential auto box. The Audi 2.5 litre gives over 180 hp, and with the quattro 4 wheel drive, and six speed manual box, it is a true diesel sports car. Incidentally Audi are about to launch a diesel A4 Cabriolet in the UK: a diesel convertible, yes thats right.
Gas in the UK is over USD6 per gallon, as is diesel, but with these sorts of fuel consumption figures, plus tax breaks based on fuel efficiency (the environment and all that) diesel cars are becoming VERY popular this side of the pond.
SAAB are not too far behind, although the 128 hp TiD in the 9-3 and 9-5 is not as good as either the Audi or BMW units, as it is not of the latest "common rail" technology. The 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel in the 9-5 is highly rated however, although I have not driven it myself
