Out-of-the-hole power?

I have a 1997 900 SE with an Automatic Transmission with MBC installed and wanted to know how can you increase the out-of-the-hole power and response? Typically I don't drive over a 100 mph so top-end is really not all that important to me. I have read countless threads regarding performance, but it addresses overall performance, not out of out-of-the-hole power specifically. I also own a 98 Volvo GLT and it's goes when I step on the gas unlike my Saab which has a Hugh turbo lag and then it gets going. Sometime in my Saab I'm afraid to pull out into traffic from a dead stop because it has no out-of-the-hole power. However, once the Saab gets going a little it has plenty of power and I'm very happy with the performance once the turbo kicks in. Any advice or idea specifically to out-of-the-hole power and response would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks
