From the tirerack tests, and the comments of others on this BB, I got them for our 97Passat Diesel. They stick very well.
As for noise, I am beginning to think that there is no such thing as a tire that does not get noisy with age.
I have the Michelin Pilot Sports and they became noisy. Tirerack rated the S-03's relative to the Sports, so that gives me a point of reference.
I will be getting S-03's soon, as the Sports are getting worn down. The grip well, so I am still flogging them.
So you got 40K on your tires, and they are well aged too! So they age harded and you got some decent miles. I expect that the braking traction and wet traction are getting quite poor. Wet traction is different from standing water traction. When the tread compound gets hard, tires can slip on pavement is more or less damp.
From your name I can guess that the Michelin's did not get a break from runing snow tires!
