You could have an open cell. A mechanical break has taken place. Often the break will pass a trickle current at decent voltage, but try to pull real load and there is nothing there. And similarily, when you try to charge, nothing happens.
If a cell has shorted, you loose 1/6th of the battery. When the battery is charging, the other 5 cells are been charged to 6/5x normal voltage. And those cells soon degrade and the engine will not crank. When you connect a charger the battery will get up to charge and voltage relatively quickly. But if you open the cell caps, you will see the cells bubbling hard, because they are being overcharged, except for one cell that is not bubbling at all.
I do around 20 to 25,000 miles a year. I find that batteries are needing to have water added 3 times per year. So much for maintenance free.
Some have been fooled and the cells have been exposes and the tops of the plates start to go dry. Deposits form which bridge the plates and a discharge through the deposits ignites the hydrogen in the battery and the battery explodes sending acid on to the engine and other things. We had a rash of that happening a few years ago, but such things are not reported as of late.
Many folks get up tight about the costs of batteries. I helps to keep the cost of a tow truck in mind as well.
