The original config was seen to leak early on and later years' production had some sealant putty used. The shock has a buffer rubber on the top and in the fender well. Water gets in there and the action seems to pump it through. The lower rubber will also compress I expect and allow some play after a while. I put some sealer putty in there when I isntalled the Koni's. I saw lots of dry salt.
But water can't get in by that route when the vehicle is simply left standing in the rain. So I don't think that that is the source of your problem. Get in the hatch with a flash light and have someone spray around the hatch and tail lamps with a hose. This has worked for others. I think that you might be wanting to remove some carpet-trim to see whats happening.
