A 1/2x1/2 bar (13mm) can be put into the socket provided in the slack adjuster. The tension can be taken off the belt, the belt slipped off of this pully. Then spin it by hand. If its dry it will want to spin forever. Feel it for wobble too. If in doubt or you feel some binding, replace asap. A new one is a bit over $30 at the dealer. A 13mm box end wrench and you can remove and replace in 60 seconds if you wanted to.
There are holes in the slack adjuster, down lower, which will line up with the adjuster back, which can be used to lock in back with a large nail or perhaps a phillips screw driver shaft.
This pully is so small, that is spins at very high speeds, which causes it to throw its lubrication. Years of heat might be as important as miles. These things fail all of the time and $30 is not much to avoid a tow truck.
So when you hear something strange, it is easy to determine if this idler pullie is in distress, or eliminate it as the problem.
