900SE Turbo (1996) check engine light on, no code

Hi,
I was idling in a traffic jam for about 30 minutes on a warm day (75F) and the Check Engine light came on. The engine continued to run OK. I stopped and restarted the engine thinking this might clear the fault, but it had no effect. I later followed the procedure to get the diagnostic code, but the Check Engine indicator doesn't flash any code. It just stays on constantly. So, now I'm wondering what might cause this type of Check Engine condition ?
Here are a few possibly relevant clues:
- at the time, the SID indicated that I had about 24 miles of fuel remaining, so perhaps this low fuel condition tricked the engine management system into believing it had a loose fuel cap ? I refueled shortly afterwards, but this had no effect.
- When I turn the ignition to "On" and turn off the climate control I can hear a regular clicking noise coming from the right side footwell. The clicks are once a second. I've never heard these before. What could be causing this ?
- There's also a constant low frequency buzzing that appears to be coming from the air cleaner. Again, I've never noticed this before, but then I don't normally have the car "On" but not running with the hood open.
I'm tempted to clear the condition and see if it comes back. How long do I need to disconnect the battery to cause the code to be cleared ?
Thanks !
Nigel
