I think the fur and white powder corrosion is common, I've heard and used water mixed with baking soda (arm and hammer, e.g.) like suggested. When you clean and/or replace, coat the terminal and connector with a fair portion of dielectric grease, available from auto parts store. Mine have that, with about 90,000 miles on the battery now, no fur.
