CEL on but not flashing

I'm unable to convince the check engine light on my 96 900SE Turbo to flash a code. First, an idiot check; I'm looking at the lit up "CHECK ENGINE" display on the dash. This is the thing that's supposed to flash after turning the ignition key from ON-OFF-ON ? Assuming it is, then if it isn't flashing does this tell me anything about the cause of the problem ?
I've reset the CEL, but it comes back on within 30 seconds of start up. Would this indicate an 02 sensor issue ? I've checked spark plugs (clean & gap), coolant level, gas cap tightness, O2 grounding. I'm considering replacing the O2 sensor but I'd rather do this with some notion that it'll fix the problem. Some people have talked about cleaning their O2 sensors, but it seems to me that unscrewing the sensor would cause the wires to get seriously twisted. Is there a way to unscrew the sensor without trashing the wires ?
Thanks !
Nigel
