Intermittant ignition switch problem

The car: 94 900S (2.3), Automatic, ~135,000 miles
The problem: Intermittant absence of power to starter. 5-6 times over the last 2 weeks I will turn the key and get nothing. Sometimes I have heard a single click near the driver's floor, but not always. I thought at first that it was a battery problem, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Sometimes I have been able to get it started by moving the gear selector to drive and then back to park. That made me think that it was the transmission gear selector lockout, but it doesn't always work.
In the cases that it hasn't worked, I have let the car roll slightly then jammed the selector back to park. Not very violently, but enough to make it jerk stopped. I suppose that it could be a flat spot in the starter or a loose connection that gets wiggled back into place.
Ulitmately, I don't like the idea of mistreating the transmission like that, and it's getting annoying having to play with it to start.
Any ideas on what the culprit might be?
