The car: 94 900S. 135 K. 2.3 L, Automatic.

Today's problem: The car stalled while driving and won't restart.

Saabusa finally delivered my replacement Secondary Air Injection vacuum valve that had disintegrated due to battery acid spillage. The valve had been bad for some time--months--but I had been driving the car daily, and it was running fine--not awesomely, but fine. I installed the replacement valve this morning.

I took the battery out to get better access. I also took out the radiator overflow tank so that I could put some epoxy on the top nipple, which had cracked. I don't think this matters--just here for reference.

After putting everything back together I took it for a 5 min test drive around the neighborhood. Everything seemed to be fine until it stalled while parking in front of my house. The started turned, but it wouldn't catch.

I took the battery back out and looked around for any connections that might have been knocked loose. I didn't see anything, so I put the battery back in and VOILA--it started. I drove it around the block and it seemed fine, so I parked it in front of the house.

About a half hour later I was going to run to get some food, so I went down the street a half block, flipped a u-turn, and directly across the street from my house it did a major hesitation. I pulled to the side and tried to keep it running. Lots of black smoke from the tailpipe. I then saw smoke coming from the engine compartment so I turned it off. Turns out the Catalytic converter was cherry red and smoking. Now it won't start.

Anybody have any bright ideas? Is the mixture too rich and unburnt fuel combusting in the cat, or is the cat clogged and choking the engine?
