Yes, my 94 NG 900 does go thru headlight bulbs quickly (about every two years...BUT, the headlights are always ON since separate daylight running lights were not provided. The headlight auto shut-off with the ignition is a nice feature, I just wish it worked with the parking lights too. I've tried to use the parking lights in the daylight to preserve the headlight bulbs, but have forgotten to turn them off and drained the battery several times.
The BEST replacement bulbs are NAPA BriteLite Xenon BP9003BL for about $10 each (last time I bought them). I compared these to PIAA and other imposters. After geting technical and life data from the manufacturers I found the NAPA (Wagner) bulb to be the superior, legal, replacement choice. The PIAAs can be obtained as a brighter bulb, at significant expense and about a third the life. I highly recommend the BriteLite bulbs from NAPA. Another plus is that NAPA originally warranted the bulbs for life; I've received one free set already. I don't know if they still do this or if it was only my local NAPA's policy.
BTW..these bulbs were originally designed by Wagner which was then acquired by Cooper Automotive and is now Federal-Mogul. I've found the sealed beam BriteLite versions at other suppliers as "Wagner Xenon BriteLite" Headlamps. I'm currently using the H6024BL's on a Miata...What a difference!!
One last note, my 94 900S has the heavy duty wiring needed for European style bulb capsules (H4?), however, I don't know if the relay will handle the higher power of the super bright (non-legal) 'off-road only' bulbs.
Hope this info helps.
