I posted below but didn't get any responses. There is more detail in that post, but basically, I replaced the Secondary Air Injection vacuum valve that had disintegrated due to battery acid spillage in my 94 900S. The valve had been bad for some time, and it had been running a little rough and fuel economy had been ~17 city, but it had been running daily.
After putting everything back together it stalled after a 5 min test drive. I disconnected the battery again and it restarted, but then massively hesitated after another couple of minutes driving. I was able to keep it running, but barely, and then noticed black smoke from the tailpipe and saw smoke coming from the engine compartment so I turned it off. The Catalytic converter was Bright Red and smoke was coming off of it.
Now it won't start at all. I did try unhooking the battery again, but though the starter does spin the engine and it sometimes acts like it wants to catch, it won't run.
My thought is that perhaps the open SIS valve was disguising an overly rich mixture (NO CEL light, but poor mileage) and after the valve was replaced the computer reset itself and now the mixture is too rich to let it run. Perhaps unburnt fuel was combusting in the cat, making it so hot, and now I've cooked it. Or maybe the cat was clogged up all along and that was causing it to stall.
and choking the engine?
