unusual tyre wear, shocks?

Just replaced the front tyres on my 98 SET, 114k miles.

I had the rears checked and rebalanced, and the fitter pointed out some unusual tyre wear. The inners of both rear wheels are showing inconsistent wear, specifically, if you look out the innermost tread blocks, there is alternating greater and lesser wear as you proress radially around the tyre, giving a castellated appearance, with alternative blocks slightly higher, then lower, then higher etc as you go aroung the tyre.

The tyres themselves are in good condition, less than half worn, although they are mixed, one being a Pirelli P Zero, and one a Michelin Pilot (both the correct 205/55 ZR 16 rating).

The fitter, who I know very well, and trust, says he thinks it could be caused by failing shocks, although the car runs fine, does not "float" over bumps, feels nice and firm, and exhibits none of the usual worn shockers symptoms. Any ideas, as I dont want to shell out for new shocks unless I have to.

BTW the fronts both wore out perfectly, with no odd wear, and the pressure was spot on 2.2 bar.
