struts and shocks revistied (long)

OK... here is what I understand now from a little research on this site and from asking around a bit. I think that I need to change the shocks/struts on my 1997 900SE. They are all original. I have 75k miles.
After I put in the SAS I got a craving for more! So here goes (btw.. just looking to see if what I understand is correct. Thanks to MJM for helping me out with info last week):
The strut is the bushing that attaches the top of the shock to the frame
of the car under the hood. If you open the hood, there are 2 mounting
points where the shocks attach to the frame of the car. The front sway bar also attaches to these two points that runs under the hood right in front of the glass. So what you see when you open the hood, is the top of the strut assemply. The strut sits in the frame and the shock sits in the strut.
The strut is a rubber & metal bushing. So the rubber loosens and makes the shock move more and makes the car softer at the front. I guess sometimes your shock is still good, but the strut (which is usually called the strut bearing) needs to be replaced.
Since I am getting the shocks replaced... I better get the struts (or mountings?) replaced at the same time. This just saves costs while they are under there working on the thing.
As I understand it, the 900SE didn't come with shocks in the front... jsut the back. IN the front was a 'strut assembly' which helps dampen the spring. I also understand that you can purchase shocks all around though for the car.. the front shocks will fit into the mounting.
