There is some good info in this old post and a link to a detailed study elsewhere.

I find that new pads/rotors don't grip well, and have worked them hard when new to get them to the point where braking performance is good. So I get them real hot the first run out. This is contrary to the advice that we get as lore and with brake parts, even EBC. In the linked article when the writer describes getting the rotors to turn blue, that is certainly further than I go. I was into hot brake-in treatment before I saw the linked article. So I was on the right path.

The pix shows the mark from a pad been held tight against a hot disk. Note the slot, but a fingerprint of the pad. This reprents uneven pad material transfer. Note that in vehicles with hand brakes that work the rear calipers, that one could transfer material to a hot rear rotor by setting the hand brake. The rear brakes in the Ng and current 9-3's date back to the 1960's. So we are safe there. I expect that the new 9-3's will have more up-to-date designs.

You will see why some folks claim that green stuff pads warped their new rotors, and why such claims are probably wide of the mark.
