Have reviewed the archives about the "check gearbox" problem and the info about the "neutral safety switch" or "transmission range switch" with the sticky grease. Here is my sad tale. '97 S model w/59000 mi., western PA. Took a drive Sunday to look at the Fall leaves (temp around 52F). After an 85 mile drive and 10 minute stop for the "Scenic Overlook" was proceeding to the next one when the chime rang, immediately followed by the red triangle and the check engine and check gearbox lights. This was NOT at startup and the tranny was shifting fine (was in Sport Mode). Pulled over, checked for leaks, etc. Tranny fluid is somewhat brown, has enough fine particles in it to leave a gray stain on a napkin and it smells slightly burned, although I don't believe excessively. It is definitely due for replacement though. Shut the car down, waited about 30 seconds and restarted; no chime or triangle, but CE and CG lights remained lit. Said a prayer and drove home; tranny shifted just fine. Searched archives for info. Next morning, started car; both lights on; shut it down and waited 10 seconds, rattled the shifter, restarted; lights out; took it for a short drive, no problem. Today (Wednesday) temp still low 50's, after about a two mile drive, chime and ABS light came on intermittently (not necessarily while braking); put in Sport Mode and lights came on immediately, but still did not stay on. Brake fluid is topped. Called to schedule diagnostic and am still waiting for return call from dealer. Meanwhile, reviewed CarFax report provided when bought used in May 2001; "Neutral Safety Switch" was replaced under warranty Dec '99 at 26000 mi. Also, the MIU instrument cluster was replaced in May of this year. I am an hour away from a dealer and expect to blow half a day just getting it checked out. Am I looking at two different problems, or is this all related? If related, is it the aforementioned switch, or something going haywire with the new MIU or??? Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read all this and especially if you have suggestions.
