This assumes [you know what that means...] that you've already got the broken stub of the plastic 'rack' out of the assembly. If not, and you're mechanically disinclined, you're better off replacing the entire unit. I've seen 'look-a-likes' in the local Pep Boys store, although wire connector is bound to be different. If you feel slightly adventurous, you can remove and disassemble it partially to get the broken piece[s] out. There's numerous postings and FAQs out there on doing this.
The teeth on the rack has to be oriented a certain way for the gear to catch. The teeth should face either forward or rearward, firm downward pressure applied as the radio is turned off [should hear motor run] and be ready to feed the whole thing in.
You do know about the thin metal retaining sleeve that needs to be on the replacement mast?
