I agree, it's not a job for the meek. The subframe has to come out first, all the shifter and downpipe etc. I've done it on jack stands but it really should be done on a lift. You'd be nuts not to replace the clutch while you're there, that means disc/pressure plate and you HAVE TO have the flywhel surfaced.
If you insist on doing it yourself, one trick I learned. You will have the engine hanging from the front mount (passenger side) and the support bar, lower the heck out of the trans side (drivers) so the trans is angled down, it makes clearing the body a bunch easier.
One last thing - have a shop do it.
