My 1986 900S manual says 10k miles. On API SF oil! My 1998 900S manual says 10k miles. This is for "normal" driving, which is what I do :)
I have done oil analysis at slightly over 9k on Mobil 1 10W-30 with Mobil 1 filter. Results indicate that oil was still in great shape and suitable for further use.
SAAB specifies different change intervals for different markets. Longer in Europe, likely due to their almost universal use of ACEA A3 rated, fully synthetic motor oils. And their superior fuel quality.
There have been numerous discussions on this topic here. Please utilize the search function.
Since we can now buy ACEA A3/B3 rated Mobil 1 0W-40 motor oil at a neighborhood AutoZone store for $5/l, I would say that 10k mile intervals are very conservative, given "normal" driving environment. Prudhoe Bay, Alaska residents who tow a camper and live near the shore may want to bump it down to 5000 miles. This oil has formal 229.3 Mercedes-Benz approval, which means that it's approved for 20000 miles oil change intervals in late model Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
