I have a 96 900SE which is just a blast to drive. Of course, I think my Direct Ignition cassette died which is why I'm on the board tonight (had my first tow experience). Overall, I'd recommend the car as a fun yet safe vehicle. Here's my experience:
I'd think the price was pretty good, assuming the car was in nice shape. I did a lot of comparison shopping, and checked list prices of other cars and the Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book values. The post about convertibles going for a premium is definitely true.
Work the top and listen for clicking or slipping sounds. The Saab convertible of that vintage had a serious problem with weak mounting brackets and the gears can be damaged or destroyed over time. Saab offers a mounting bracket for about $10 which you can learn more about on this board. Some people say it's an easy job to install - I paid about $100 to have mine installed (it looked more complex and time consuming than I wanted to deal with). Tragically, it was too late to save the motor and it was about $600 for a rebuilt unit. The Saab list price on the thing is about $1,300 so you'll want to make sure the reinforcing brackets are on.
Other than that, the fact that it's a Saab means more expensive maintenance but it's a great car which I've been driving in Massachusetts weather with no problems meaning it's a convertible which really can be driven year round.
Good luck.
