need defrosting tips

I have a '97 900 S. Every winter I struggle with this and thought I would ask for some tips. What is the best setting to keep my windows clear during the winter? If I use the defroster, it will clear the windhshield but all the side windows remain fogged and never clear. I have to constantly open and close the windows to keep these windows clear. I found the windshield stays clear when the heat is at 3/4 and the fan at speed 4. If I bump the heat to 100% it actually fogs the windshield up. Using the air conditioner will clear the windows very quickly but it's too cold to drive that way. Turning the heat on once again fogs the windows up. I also need to keep the defroster on at all times, and at fan speed 4. If I change the setting from defroster to something else it fogs up very quickly. It does not stay clear if I set the fan speed for anything less than 4. In each case I have the fan vents open to outside air. Closing it makes things worse. Does anyone else have this problem? It seems to me this car has horrible ventalation. Looking for any tips to try.
