Check Trans Light comes on, 98 900S

Since purchasing this 98 900 about 3 years ago, I've occasionally had the "check trans light" come on, usually in colder weather after the car has set over night or longer. It comes on when shifting to drive and the trans goes into 3rd instead of 1st (I guess the trans computer gets confused...the lever says trans should be in 1st but it's actually in 3rd!). It continues to start out in 3rd unless you shut off the ignition for a second or two, then restart, at which time it shifts correctly but the light remains on for several starts and stops before going out. It's beginning to happen more often...once after sitting only 4 hours and tonite after only a couple hours (and this time it did it apparently when shifting into reverse but then shifted into drive just fine). The dealer once told me they had seen several do this and it seemed related to a car sitting for a while and the battery getting low on charge. I note that there are some "hits" on this problem on the board here and was wondering if there is any consensis as to what the cause is and the cure?? So far my "cure" has been to simply shut off the ignition for a second, turn it back on and then ignore the light until it goes out...but it gets a bit irritating!!
