Like I said, I doubt that you would actually take advantage of it on the street. With top line performance tires, I bet my car can hang with others with 17' wheels and not so great tires. I am not saying that they are a selling point but the originals were probably not presentable because of some kind of damage so the dealer took it upon themselves to get a presentable set of wheels on the car.
And yes, when you are talking rotating mass, that which must be spun by the engine to make the car move, 10 pounds can make a large difference. Why do you think tuners lighten flywheels and go for light weight wheels. Any wieght like this, takes from your overall power output at the wheels. As far as I am concerned a wheel must be large enough to clear the brakes and thats about it.
And one last thing, when people say that changing wheel sizes made a difference in the way their car feels, they probably went from stock tires, usually H rated touring tires, to V or Z performance tires. The difference in the tire designs made a larger impact on performance.
So I guess my point is that any advantage gained in better handling is probably lost on the accelleration side. I am not trying to fight, just stating my opinion. :)
Have fun!
Eric Burr
