Yes, the V6 is bad, Very bad. So far, mine has been a total and absolute nightmare. Every day, it gets me to where I want to go, smoothly and - with one exception - reliably. It sounds better than the 9-3 turbo I test drove, has plenty of power, and doesn't take much gas or oil.
Now to the only incident where it did NOT get me to my destination. Or let's better say, I diverted to the dealer, because of a strange rattle from the engine. They misdiagnosed it as a noisy water pump, and when I went to pick up the car, the engine would not start anymore. It turned out that on the camshaft, the key which drives the timing belt gear had sheared off.
Since the car still had timing belt warranty at 91k miles, Saab took over the repair cost, except $1000. For that, I got two complete new heads, the most up to date timing belt gear, a new water pump, fresh fluids, and a few other little fixes. No problems since.
The only critique I have is the 4-speed automatic transmission, which feels like there is a gear missing between 3rd and 4th. And the tires could be a little wider, too!
No, I would not trade it for a turbo. And not for the new model 9-3 either. No V6, no hatch back - no Saab for me. If I have to buy a sedan or wagon, it's going to be an Audi, or maybe, maybe a Mercedes C-Class. The new 9-3 is as irrelevant as a Hyundai or Kia in their class.
