I've got a '96 900SEt, with 160k miles on it. It has a rattle coming from somewhere under the valve cover/timing chain area. The rattle is erratic, in that it doesn't seem to correspond in any way to RPM. As RPM increases, the noise interval remains irregular and doesn't occur any more/less frequently.
I recently bought the car, for a bargain price, and was told that according to Saab techs, it was the tensioner for the timing "belt".
Its going into the local dealership (concours, Milwaukee) next week for a 30k service and inspection and I'm curious about what I can expect to hear.
Maybe this has been covered before - in which case any pointing in the right direction topic-wise would be appreciated.
I usually do all maintenence myself, so naturally I want to be as informed as possible when I talk with the dealer service guys.
Thanks
jesse
