Slow and cheap for car #1 is my advice, too. My 19-yr-old son has a 95 Saturn SL2 beater with 105,000 miles on it and the vanity plate of his choice, and couldn't be happier. Car is cheap to run and reliable so far. Even so, our insurance went up by $2,500 a year (CA) when he got his license last year (we lived overseas until he was 18 so two years of saved insurance premiums roughly paid for the car and an Aamco A/T overhaul it needed on day one).

Saab-wise, I'd go for a non-turbo convertible if rag top is required. Someone else will have to tell you which year is best.

Or, if you live in Southern California, you can buy her my wife's clean 1993 non-turbo Volvo 850 GLT (now there's a tank!) - parked two months ago when her new '02 9-5 came home. We'd give it to the young master, but he keeps his Saturn such a pig sty inside that we couldn't bear to see the Volvo littered with dead walkman batteries, Carl's Junior bags and empty cigarette packs. Better to find it a good home somewhere else.
