Feeling nostalgic on the holiday. The thread about soot in the exhaust pipe reminded me of this and I wanted to ask the experts. When I was in high school, my dad bought a brand new baby blue 1963 Triumph Spitfire - and I shared running costs and custody. [What a great old ride - the most fun a boy could have with 63 horsepower!] Anyway, our local mechanic told us that the coating in the tailpipe should be a light beige or gray color if the Solex was adjusted properly, but a couple of times a year, he insisted we should put a quart of 10-weight motor oil in the tank on top of a full tank of gas. I guess like "top oil" only a huge dose. I think we did it once (half a quart) but my dad didn't like the black soot in the tailpipe and decided the guy was nuts. Didn't actually produce much oil smoke, if any, IIRC. Anyway, was that mechanic loony or was there something to it?

/Geoff
