While replacing the wires/cap/rotor today (pre-turkey), I started the car in the garage and while under the hood, heard the air pump kick in after a few seconds. No problem, except a huge amount of air was escaping from the pump right where the large hose entered (this is the one from the exhaust manifold). My first thought (just by feeling the air) was that the hose was rotted. But after the pump shut off, it continued to buzz real loud, in a weird way.
In reading some earlier posts, this (almost) exact scenario was discussed, and it was said that the valve was cracked, and that after the pump shut off the exhaust from the manifold was pushed back thru the broken pump, making the noise.
My question is - is this valve part of the pump itself (and as such you need to replace the whole pump), or is there some other valve attached? The vacuum line going to the solenoid on the firewall is sound and no leaks there - just from the pump output. Any info will be helpful.
thx - andy
