Coincidentally there has been some recent ongoing discussion on the board about this issue. Do a search on "check gearbox" and you'll find a lot of postings.
The short story is that this is usually caused by one of a couple things. First thing, and cheapest to check is low voltage to the computer during startup. This can confuse and result in "check engine/check gearbox". I just started investigating mine recently and a year after changing the battery at Saab there was corrosion on and under the battery terminals. I cleaned, everything up, reset the MIL's (with my trusty OBD-s software and cable) and I'll know over the next hours/days if it is fixed.
The second and more expensive and usual cause is the auto transmission range switch. The grease inside the switch seems to be sensitive to cold and eventually causes faults in contacts within the switch. Check the postings as there are more scenarios but these are the most common.
Hope that helps.
