ABS is NOT about shortening stopping distances (much to some people's dismay in certain situations). SOMETIMES it will take slightly longer to stop but you're stopping in a much more controlled way.
Without ABS an unskilled driver (or even a skilled driver in a panic situation) will just jam on the brakes and lock em up... Locked brakes will cause the car to SLIIIIIDE and usually the rear tires will start to head off in their own direction or the car will want to "swap ends". This is to be avoided at all costs!!
Try this... Find a big lot with nothing to hit. Then practice with and without ABS... Notice the difference in CONTROL (not just stopping distance). Most times you actually WILL stop shorter with ABS if you STAY ON IT!! The problem is that people chicken out and let off the pedal when it vibrates or God forbid, start "pumping" the brakes which defeats the system...
Then turn the car off and remove the ABS fuse (this will temporarily kill the speedometer that relies on ABS sensors but it's no big deal). Now practice the same panic stops. Try braking and turning the wheel at the same time... Notice the definite lack of steering control.
I've tried both with and without ABS many times... I'm convinced and I''ll leave the fuse IN! ;-)
