I had a block heater installed in my chevy van a few years ago as it sat outside in NH winter weather. I put in the factory unit that went into a freeze plug. When heated, the element heated the coolant so that cold starts weren't so cold. The problem I had with that scenario is that I was pumping luke-warm coolant and stone-cold oil. It made some very interesting sounds when it was first running, with the different fluid temps.
What I found is that the better method for heating is to find one of those pads you stick to the bottom of the oil pan (I think Wolverine is one brand). This way, you heat the oil and the heat rises upwards and also heats the coolant (indirectly). I found with that method it started easier, warmed up fast, and since the fluids were closer to the same temp, the sounds were more normal. Ran that config each winter with no problems.
