Sounds like you are getting the usual runaround, NO car manufacturer wants to pay for repairs. They reluctantly keep a good faith during the mandated warranty period, but even during those first years they find ways to sneek a little bit of money out of the customer.
Saab use to have (at least here in LA, and maybe still do) a deductable of $150.00 for warranty work on expensive stuff. So if you brought your car in for several warranty items, it was $150.00 per item.
They might have done away with it by now.
I don't think anyone have been able to collect the full amount of money for these repairs, (and shouldn't really, since car is way beyond warranty) but several people have gotten a 2/3 deduction or a $1000.00 off on total, or a better price on another Saab.
It's all a matter of how loud you can be, and present your case.
If it comes down to that you have to pay for it yourself, have it as an option to replace the engine with a used one. It might be cheaper than to repair the old one.
I have a V6 in the shop right now, where the T-belt jumped at freeway speed. It cleaned all the 24 valves, broke valve guides and damaged three camshafts.
I will not try to repair this engine because I feel that damage could have been done to pistons as well, even though I can't see anything from the top of the piston (it could have depressed and locked up piston rings)
The preliminary estimate using new parts comes to about $6000.00 Parts and labor.
A used engine can be found for about $2500.00 plus around $1000.00 for installation.
