Hi, Andy
I'll apoligize in advance for the long response.
The mechanic had all the toys and everything checked out good. It was fun seeing all he could check with the diagnostic tool. MAF,TPS,Injectors,O2 Sensor,IAC,etc. all good(sound familiar?). The patterns were just what he expected to see. The car was doing it's thing especially in gear so that was good at least he could see it. He said this is not uncommon and can be tough to fix,no kidding.
What he ended up doing was turning the IAC backwards and putting OEM cap rotor and wires on. He said that setting the base idle higher like I did is fine but when you get big temp changes or load changes the IAC still has to work and that is why it is hit or miss. Mine ran great on warmer days 45 deg. or more but same old same old when it was colder. I guess it was relying on the IAC more on cold days. But any way he set that "where it belongs" and now for the big news. Seems great but I hate to claim victory to soon. The factory cap rotor and wires I guess I can see. The IAC in backwards kind of throws me but he played with it both ways and there is no denying it is far better backwards.
The guy was real decent and let me watch the whole time. And you gotta love a guy who's not afraid to tinker. The "fuel mapping" patterns did not follow the surge so he didn't feel it was caused by the ECM. He said the cap and rotor could cause it along with wires to a lesser extent. Just kind of loading up to the point the IAC had to open to clear it out. It does seem to idle stronger and the surge to this point is definately gone. It's just that I keep waiting for it to happen but so far so good.
I can't begin to explain the backwards IAC helping and neither could he but what the heck if it works it works. So a little bit of a let down not finding some major thing bad but if it stays working no more VIP distributor parts for me,and of course a backwards IAC to boot. So I don't know Andy the IAC thing might be worth trying I would really like to know if it helps yours to. In a couple of days I'll post for better or worse on the long term results. If you decide to try it let me know how you make out.
Danny.
