There is a check valve for the rear wiper. You have to take the driver's side corner lamp out and it's in the cavity between the outer quarter panel and the engine bay. It's been a while since i repaired mine, so i'm sorry i can't provide more details.
The headlight wipers are indeed driven by independent motors. They're not very hard to get at, you just have to take the headlight out and they're held down with two nuts. I've tried to repair my broken one, but with no luck so far. Just for a laugh, go to your dealer and ask how much a replacement wiper motor is- you'll realize very quickly that you don't need them THAT much. Especially when you take one apart and look at how little stuff there is in there- the most expensive thing is what looks like a 10 dollar electric motor. Usual Saab highway robbery on parts prices.
