1996 900S 2.3 L NA. The new exhaust manifold I had installed (Thanks Mike)has the holes closed off for the secondary air intake. So I have pulled the fuses and the hose/pump assembly are sitting idle waiting for me to remove them.

Anyway, the state is Maryland and they do emmissions using the OBD II hook-up. All codes came out good and I was on my way.

I have had the secondary air intake disabled for about 400 miles, and the only time I got a check engine light was when I stepped on the gas before the engine/cat got warmed up (which makes sense since the secondary air intake is used to burn excess fuel early and warm up the cat).

Conclusions: The secondary air intake can be disabled and removed with no effect on emmissions and without triggering a constant CEL. Additionally, without all that tubing it really cleans up the engine compartmen.
