The spring in the latch has broken. Latch in my '95 SEt let go last summer.(*%$&# GM parts!!) Here's what you do:
Go down to your friendly local salvage yard and find a much less fortunate NG than yours.
Pop the hatch open, remove the latch (two bolts and there's a wire for the remote actuator that just diconnects)
Remove the broken latch in your Saab
Install the replacement latch.
Takes about 5-10 minutes.
