D in D: I replaced the rear muffler on my V6 a few months back, maybe look for my "weekend project" post on the topic, if I did one.
If you can get the car on stands (not needed), do a visual inspection for rusted out parts and holes. Next, put your hand over the COLD mufflre pipe, listen for "whistling" from a hole to locate leak.
The replacement is so simple you'd kick yourself for paying someone to do it. With your skills and tools, its no problemo, you only need one wrench, maybe a pliers, the rear is only one clamp. I personally went for price, think I got a Starla, but not sure, whatever was cheapest, I figure even a cheap one will last at least 50-75k, right? On the V6, the rear muffle hangs just next to and behind the driver's rear wheel. Check for visual cues such as rusted hangers (there are three, they are shaped like bent pencils), these are what rusted off mine. The rear is attached to the middle muffler pipe by a clamp. Use lots of rust-buster on the one bolt on the clamp and let it soak, to remove. Order a new clamp for the buck or so it will cost, the old one will be roached with rust etc. I didn't do this so I had to order and wait, using the old clamp and a new bolt (not recommended). Also order new rubber hangers, they too are cheap, can't recall if they come with it or not. The whole assembly just slides onto the hangers, imagine oversized Honeycomb cereal, but made of rubber, the hole on top goes onto the car hanger, the hole on the bottom goes onto the muffler, then there are small re-usable press-on clamps (like thin washers) to hold it on.
The middle muffler is held on the same way, but I think with only two hangers. I would have done the middle also, but like a mope I actuall paid SAAB some huge amount of money to do it (like $400 bucks), that was just about the time I started DIY, for obvious reasons. The whole process remove and replace should take only 15-30 minutes, I spent most of my time muscling off the old rusted clamp. I backed the car up to a drop off in the alley, as I didn't have jack stands at the time. Very easy DIY, can't believe I paid to have it done!
