Bolts are hardened and quite brittle, Looseness or over tightness can lead to failure. Lots of expansion and contraction going on here, the spacers on the long studs are supposed to help ease the strain. Cyclic failure over time. Turbo may contribute to failure due to higher exhaust pressures (adds to cyclic problem). In my case I think the infamous 1994 NG900 failed exhaust bracket may have contributed, as this may have allowed some shear movement which brittle bolts do not tolerate.
Mechanic tells me he sees this on a lot of NG900 Saabs - always far left cylinder. Odd we have not seen more posts, but Anders has seen this before as indicated on a previous response.
What can be done? Keep an eye on condition of turbo supports and exhuast hangers. Make sure proper torque is applied to bolts. 18 lbs. for NG900.
