Hello potential Saaber!

Inspite of what has been said about 900's they are pretty reliable cars I own a 95 900S and to date (141,000 km or ~85,000 miles) have only had the following problems (in order of severity):

1. Starter died last year at 120,000 km> I had it rebuilt by my mechanic for CDN$160

2. Clutch cable broke at 130,000 or so (in your case it should not be a problem as the last two years 97 and98 had the clutches upgraded) again not too expensive CDN$110.

3.Front rotors replaced at 140,000 km didn't really have to do it but they seemed to devolop some grooves so as a preventive measure I got a pair of Brembo rotors for CDN$ 130 again in my opinion good price.

4. Lost all refrigerant due to punctred hose (???)

That would be all, for repairs the car is pretty tight and rattle/squeak free, corrosion is not a problem even though I live in Ontario Canada where roads are covered in salt ( and I mean pure salt!) for three months out of a year, the underbody is rust free after 7 years, little rust can only be seen on clamps, and those are of CHEAP!quality the clamps were the source of slow coolant leaks on my car and many of other list members reported the same. Oil changes can be done (according to the manual ) as infrequently as 16,000 km (10,000 miles) but I would not stretch it this far I do it every 7,000-8,000 km and use Mobil 1 %w-30 in winter as )W-30 is not available in the "true north" and Havoline synthetic 5W-40 in Summer. Overall maintenance costs are not higher than other cars.
*Spark plugs replacement every 50,000km (35,000 miles)CDN$40 per set
*Coolant every 2 years or 60,000km (35-40,000 miles) 8.5 litres (9 quarts) capacity.
*Air filter every 40,000km (25,00 miles) Abut CDN$ 15
*Fuel filter every 60,000km (35-40,000 miles) easy to replace in your driveway About CDN$ 30
* Manual transmission needs no replacement of oil should you still decide to do it dealer can put Saab synthetic oil in it for CDN$ 110, your transmission will thak you for it for automatic I think it is 100,000 km or 60,000 miles.
* Brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years or or 60,00 km dealer does it for CDN$ 120.
And that is all I know.
Best of luck
