Well it seems that Saab did in fact have a problem with the 1997 head torque. I have read all the past posts on this board and had an eerily similar experience. My 97 2.0T with only 44K miles on the clock started leaking coolant. It was slow then progressively worse. I checked all the hoses repeatedly.

After a visit to the dealer (B&B Saab in Santa Clara) turned out to need a new head gasket. It was leaking from the front right side, as many posts here have indicated. I am scheduled to pick up the car tomorrow. The original quote for the head gasket replacemnet was $1,400 inclusive of tax (about $1,100 of labor and $250 in parts). I called Saab Cars USA customer support and provided proof of all regular maintenance performed at Saab authorized dealers. They are going to give me goodwill of $500 toward the repair. It seems as though Saab should be correcting these issues on low mileage cars. It seems like poor manufacturing or materials when a head gasket fails at less than 100K miles. In this case it appears as though it was poor manufacturing- Saab should have issued a recall to have all heads retorqued and inspected.
