Do you mean that the threads stripped or is there a metal boss pressed into the pan that came loose?
Is the universal plug one of those expanding rubber things?
I'm assuming you have the 2.3 engine and I believe that has a cast alloy oil pan. If the metal is thick enough you might be able to drill it out to the next larger size pipe and use an NPT tap to create new threads and use a standard pipe plug. You might be able to get away with doing it on the car if you pour a few quarts of oil through to flush out any chips from tapping and drilling.
Many older cars and large trucks used NPT oil pan plugs. NPT threads are tapered and usually won't leak unless under pressure. if it does drip some teflon tape will stop the leak.
