These all had a steel shims ex-factory. Most of these have rotted out and been discarded. There are some good stick-on types. I would keep the goop well away from the piston outer boot rubbers!
Yes, there cross shaped springs that bear on the pad backing plates and spring against the hold-down pins. These are needed, are they there? They can rust badly. Smear them and the pins with (white) lithium grease as a rust preventative. That grease stand up well to water. Also put a film on the backing plate edges and caliper slots. Avoid the piston boots!
The brake dust and grease really makes a mess of you hands!
