Mysterious slow coolant leaks seem to be an NG900 speciality.

There have been a lot of postings concerning this. Common problems include water pump on its way out, loose hoses (OEM hose clips not brilliant), heater core leak (smell coolant with heater on inside car?) and also a leak from the head gasket. I had this last problem and to begin with it was difficult to see where the leak was. Over time the leak got worse and I finally traced it to the right hand corner of the block, with some spattering of coolant in the area you describe.

To try and find out where the leak is, I suggest you start the engine from cold and let it run for a few minutes and then look for leaks. Coolant evaporates on a hot engine, so you might not see the source of the leak after running the car and often leaks will only occur once the cooling system is pressurised.

If it is the head gasket (I didn't have any coolant in with the engine oil either), then if it has not been done before, you can retorque the cylinder head bolts (simple job, took me an hour). These bolts are of a special type ("stretch bolts") and should not be retorqued more than once, as this makes them prone to failure. Saab issued a technical service bulletin to dealers concerning this problem, which you can view at http://www.townsendimports.com. If this does turn out to be the problem, then you need to follow the directions in the TSB exactly.
