Check your ignition system: plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Check ignition timing. You can't adjust it, of course, but it's easy to check.
Make sure plugs and plug gaps are proper for the non-turbo engine. Some people have suggested that copper NGK BCP6ES plugs will work with a non-turbo 2.3. I still use gold-palladium NGK BCP6EV ($4-6 each) because NGK catalog lists them for this engine. Anything other than NGKs is liable to cause problems.
Make sure your ignition wires are in good shape. Use only OEM Boogiecord wires (about $30.) In particular, avoid Bosch ignition wires -- I have personally had problems with them. Their resistance is way lower than 7-8 kOhm specified for this engine. I have had very good experience with Magnecor ignition wires, but they are pretty expensive.
