ACC in 900 SET - Not the Fastest Way to Get Warm?

In these past few weeks in freezing DC, I've noticed that the ACC in my '98 900 SET doesn't seem to figure out how to get me warm real quick.
If I set the temperature at anywhere between 70-78 and hit the Auto button, it first starts by directing air through the windshield vent, then after a few minutes through the top and bottom (feet) vents. However, it does NOT set itself to re-circulate - which is the fastest way to get warm air inside the cabin as far as I know.
Why does the ACC insist on being in the "fresh air" mode? That's good when it's damp and the windows start fogging up - by on a cold clear day it takes almost 5 more minutes to get as warm that way than it would with the re-circulate mode.
Any ideas to trick the ACC to do this? I can always do it manually, but then why have the ACC ;-)
